A new book claims you can boost your business by strategically using the Pinterest website. The social bookmarking site that allows users to create a visual, online pinboard with images around topics of their choice. According to “Entrepreneur Magazine’s Ultimate Guide to Pinterest for Business” by Karen Leland, it’s the fastest growing social media site in history, and now the third-largest network after Facebook and Twitter. It has more than 25 million members and 10 million unique visitors a month — and it can be “a valuable source of prospects, promotion and profits,” the author says. “Great business brands are about telling compelling, congruent stories, and Pinterest is at its core about storytelling in pictures,” Leland adds. “Pinterest has tapped into this visceral lover of visuals, and no small business, entrepreneur or corporation can afford to miss the boat on bringing what they offer beyond words and into images.” Leland’s business consultation site is here — with bonuses to the book’s content.
In this interview on the DIMAcast, Leland talks specifically about how photographers and photography businesses can best benefit from using the site.

Most of us use photography to capture the real world. Now artists are using it to create a fantasy world based on pictures of real objects. Photogrammetry is used in engineering, map-making, architecture and other fields to determine geometry from a photo. Now game developers can take multiple shots of an object at differing angles, and then use the free 123Sketch software to produce a textured 3D object. When the object is placed in a game, the player can virtually walk around and see it from all sides. In this episode of the DIMAcast, Skull Theater developer Jeff Isselee explains why he chose the technique, and what camera and studio considerations affect the art.
A video preview of the 3D art is here.

Volunteer pro photographers will capture free portraits of family members of active duty members of the military at The Big Photo Show, through the PMDA’s Portraits of Love program. Working in cooperation with the USO and Shutterfly, the portraits will then be sent to deployed servicemen and women all over the world, and each family will receive a free portrait to keep for themselves. Hundreds of families are expected take part in portrait sessions held throughout the two-day event. “Thanks to the Portraits of Love program, more than1,000 family portraits were sent around the world during 2012,” said Jerry Grossman, Executive Director of the PMDA. “Military families are encouraged to contact their local Los Angeles USO office to arrange for a portrait session at The Big Photo Show.” On this episode of the DIMAcast, Grossman tells us how the program got started, what it means to those in the service who receive a photo, and how it exemplifies the true meaning of photography.
