How does a 90 year old company in a “mature downtown” stay fresh without breaking the bank? Wolfe’s Camera in Topeka, Kansas gave the team a free hand to “make it fresh”. By using lots of creativity, plenty of brain power, hours of discussion and a few gallons of paint both the store and the team were revitalized. Creative displays, brighter colors and more open spaces created a shopper’s dream, a place to wander, browse and dream what can be done with their pictures. The transcript contains pictures of before/after as well as some of the stores new services displays. Listen as Sondra Harkness shares her story in this week’s DIMAcast at www.DIMAcast.com

Reaching out to help others is good citizenship and can be good for business. That wasn’t Precision Camera’s motivation but it was the result. By partnering with the Boot Campaign Precision Camera was able to generate more traffic to their Expo while setting a record for Boot Campaign’s sales. Proceeds from Boot Campaign go to support returning military personnel and/or their families. The campaign was started in 2009 by five “boot girls” who met at a fund raiser and felt they could “make a difference” for those warriors who served their country and were now in need. (note: the Boot Campaign was started long before the Veteran’s Administration scandal was public knowledge – the “boot girls” saw part of the problem with VA and found a way to help the impacted personnel and families.) Hear how this event came about, the result and pick up ideas how you can help those around you while establishing your company’s brand among your target customers on this week’s DIMAcast. The rumor was his mug sales were up 700% in December, his mouse pads up 500% - and this is a 20 year old lab, not some tiny start-up. Could this kind of growth be possible? Bill McCurry was in the UK to address a Fuji Retailers Conference as well as the PMA Retail Seminars. Bill grabbed his DIMAcast microphone and snuck into Pete Davies’ studio between a portrait shooting and a commercial account to bring you the unique story. A twenty year old lab goes against “conventional wisdom” to change his business with the mindset of a start-up company. The result is the most profitable December in the lab’s history. Learn from Pete Davies of Marlborough Photo Services how to become and stay relevant to the customer base that will reward you with serious profits.

I don't think that we even want to use the gallery as a way to create sales. It's not a place to sell. It's a place to enjoy photography.

In an era when short sighted management is chasing ephemeral ROI, Hunt’s Photo and Video realizes that not all the right decisions can be run through a ROI matrix. Scott Farber and Mike Mitchell discuss their recent remodeling and why “that's one of the big things with retail going forward, it's all about the experience. Your customer has a choice of maybe shopping from three stores. But they only have time to go to one. Your store has to be the type of place where somebody wants to be - wants to spend their time, because time is a commodity there’s not enough of.”

Hunt’s doesn’t follow conventional wisdom in many things they do. Listen in, Read the transcript. View the pictures as the Hunt’s team answers Bill McCurry’s questions how this 100+ year old company continually readjusts its focus to be perpetually customer relevant.

Significant sales growth in a declining market . . . How does Leederville Camera beat its peers? Could it be the three baristas on staff? Or the clean store without ‘messy’ manufacturers’ displays? What about the displays showing how your camera can make large images on canvas, metal, paper or a variety of substrates? Could it be the magic of multiple buyers in the store encouraging others to buy? Maybe the $269 for two hours of private tutoring? Listen to this week’s DIMAcast. Then look at the transcript with over 30 images of the store and you decide what makes Lidio Fiore and Leederville Camera unique. Most importantly, look at your own business in light of Lidio and his family’s philosophy. Lots of profitable lessons in this week’s DIMAcast #364 for November 4, 2013.
